MUNCIE, Ind. — While the Centers for Disease Control’s COVID-19 Eviction Moratorium was extended until Jan. 31, many local programs have already begun assisting those who have struggled to pay rent during the pandemic.
Samantha Buckles, director of Bridges Community Services, Inc., said she has seen an influx of people coming in for assistance due to COVID-19.
“We’re getting quite a few individuals who are being evicted, not having anywhere to go and not having funds, because they have lost their jobs or their hours have shortened and they can’t afford to pay their rent,” Buckles said.
As of Jan. 15, 36 eviction cases have been filed since Jan. 1, 2021, said Delaware County Courts Administrator Emily Anderson.
The moratorium’s purpose is to halt evictions due to nonpayment of rent up until its deadline, but tenants still can be evicted for other lease violations, including property damage, drug use and other infractions.
