Burris Shutdown

Burris

Dear Burris Community,

The health and safety of our entire community is of the utmost importance to us. During the first week back from winter break, we have seen a significant uptick in the number of positive COVID-19 cases throughout our school community causing a large number of our students, faculty and staff to quarantine. This additional surge has impacted our ability to adequately staff our classrooms. Beginning Tuesday, January 19th, Burris Laboratory School will transition to remote learning through Friday, January 29 for all students in grades K-12. Burris is not in session on Monday, January 18th to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin King, Jr. All athletic games and practices will be suspended as well.

We strive to continue the high level of student engagement that we see in our in-person classrooms. Our faculty and staff will continue to make every effort to provide this engagement with the support of our families via remote learning. Parents can expect information from classroom and fine arts teachers regarding remote instruction in the upcoming days. Also, please remember you can sign up for free breakfasts and/or lunches weekly via our PowerSchool Alert system.

Through the generosity of grants from the Community, Ball Brothers and the George and Frances Ball Foundation, we are able to provide families with mobile hotspots and assist with connectivity issues. Please reach out to our technology coordinator, Mr. Reese, at lareese@bsu.edu, if needed.

For your benefit, the state of Indiana provides a list of testing options if you or members of your family experience COVID-19-like symptoms. Please notify the school nurse at hlchalfant@bsu.edu or 765-285-2340 any time your child is tested for COVID-19, and notify the nurse again with the testing result. We also appreciate knowing when a household member has tested positive for the virus.

As always, we will keep you informed of any updates as new information regarding the health and safety of our school community arises.

Sincerely,

Dawn Miller
